When you
choose the upgrade option in Configuration Manager, Configuration Manager
performs upgrading tasks such as migrating essential data from your existing
LiveCycle configuration, and migrating security credentials. The
upgrade process also provides backward-compatibility support for
the upgraded version of LiveCycle.

Update 1 or LiveCycle ES2 involves these tasks:
Preparing your environment for upgrade.
Installing LiveCycle product files.
Running Configuration Manager to initiate the configuration,

manual steps are required after you complete the upgrade and deployment
process to ensure that your previous properties are retained and
the client applications are fully migrated and continue to run with
LiveCycle.
