Welcome

Welcome to the Help for the Adobe LiveCycle ES4 XDC Editor 10. Use the XDC Editor to create and modify XML Forms Architecture Device Configuration (XDC) files.

XDC files describe the capabilities of printers, such as the printer language, the printer fonts, and the mapping between Adobe LiveCycle ES4 Designer 11 paper size and input tray locations.

The Adobe LiveCycle ES4 - Output 11 installation includes a set of generic printer XDC files for supported print languages, and several sample XDC files that describe the standard configurations of some common printers and label printers. Using these XDC files as your starting point, you can create new XDC files that represent the capabilities of the printers that you want to use. The XDC Editor guides you through that process.

About this Help

This Help includes conceptual and procedural information that you require to use XDC Editor. Use this Help to learn about the following aspects of XDC Editor:

  • About XDC files

  • Creating and modifying XDC files

  • Deploying XDC files to the applications and services that use them

Who should read this Help?

This Help is intended for network printer administrators who are responsible for updating their XDC files to accurately describe the settings and capabilities of the network printers available to the Output server. In some LiveCycle server installations, the network printer administrator may be a process designer with special knowledge of the network printers used by the Output server.

Here are some of the situations in which the network printer administrator is required to create or modify XDC files:

  • When adding a new printer model for use with an existing application that relies on printer features

  • When creating or updating an application that requires access to specific printer features, such as mapping a new paper type to an input tray

  • When adding new fonts that match those that reside in the target printers

  • When setting up sequences for printer-based document copy and staple

  • When setting up different specialized printers such as label printers

It is important to remember that basic print applications can be developed without customizing an XDC file for the target printers. The generic XDC file provided with the installation may suffice if the following criteria are met:

  • Printed content uses embedded or common printer fonts such as Arial

  • Document must be single-sided

  • Document must be printed on default available input trays, such as A4, letter, or legal
